Fabricating With Fungi

Saturday 14th December 2024

Join us to explore mycelium (the vegetative fibres of a mushroom) as a material experiment for design applications. You will learn how to grow a variety of samples starting from your own mycelium substrate starter to take home, to mycelium grown using experimental techniques and sculpting into shape!

We’ll be diving into the science behind fungi, exploring mycellium microscopy, while also discussing the potential for future building materials and guiding you through a series of resources that you can do at home.

Meet your Instructor
Kirsten is a Scottish artist and biodesigner whos latest body of work uses mycelium fabrication to provoke climate action and multispecies team ups.

Kombucha Crafts

Saturday 7th December 2024

Join us on a journey to explore Kombucha Bacterial Cellulose (SCOBY), made of a symbiotic glob of bacteria, yeast and tea. We will discuss brewing techniques, and the basic biology behind the method of how bacteria cleverly protects itself from the acid in the solution by creating cellulose around it.

You’ll discover Kombucha’s special properties for various biodesign applications and sustainable materials, creating your own starter culture to take home. As well as, exploring living kombucha to manufacture your own hand-grown sheet of paper and its microscopic world.

Meet your Instructor
Andrea Martina is a biodesign researcher and practitioner working at the intersection of architecture, digital fabrication and biology. Her expertise extends across biomaterial fabrication of Kombucha leather and the development of sustainable inks from algae pigments.

Material Makers:  Biobuilders
Afterschool Drop-in

Friday 11th October 2024

Join Lifefabs Community Biofab Lab for an exciting event exploring biodesign and how we can use natural waste and resources to create organic materials.

The Bio-Builders Afterschool Drop-in is an interactive session designed for kids aged 7-14, families, and carers to learn about the endless material possibilities of biodesign.

Kids & Families will have hands-on experience creating biomaterials like bioplastics and foams, using natural dyes to print, and exploring the micro-world of materials under microscopes. No prior experience is needed—just bring your curiosity and imagination.
