Join the lab as a member to access research-grade facilities and develop your own projects in biofabrication and sustainable materials.
Lifefabs Institute is designed to support all researchers (from local residents to post-docs) to experiment with biomaterials, living systems, and sustainable technologies.
Whether pursuing a passion project, continuing research, or exploring a start-up spin out of an early-stage biodesign concept, our researchers save time and money, preventing long drawn-out funding accelerators with no research space.
Instead, your energy and time can be devoted to the development and translation of ideas.
We don't want your intellectual property: we want to see your project reach the real world and make a difference.
Designed as a flexible lab facility, our biodesign wet-lab space enables us to develop benchtop demonstrations and materials. The lab includes microscopy imaging facilities with incubators, PCR thermocyclers, Opentrons automated liquid handlers, safe sample storage and handling, and more:

Maria Tabanelli:
Exploring bacterial cellulose as a wearable interface, the work investigates how the material absorbs sweat, responds to physiological conditions, and creates material records of sporting experience.
Jenn Leung:
Working at the intersection of synthetic biology, real-time simulation, and living neural systems, Jenn’s research currently focuses on developing Unreal Engine interfaces for living neurons and agent behaviour simulations.
Sana Jazeer:
UrbanBloomLiving mycelium composites (myco-resin) designed as bio-indicators - materials that both detect and repair urban soil contamination.
Penn Ryan:
Research on bioluminescent interactive displays and digitally fabricated food.
